Honeymooning in Hawaii in 1985, Garry and
his wife Cynthia fell in love with the vibrant colors of the islands. Back in their
Minnesota home they began dreaming of moving to Hawaii. Returning to Hawaii in 1987,
already accomplished in oils and acrylics, Garry expanded his artistic expertise to
watercolor. He began to record Hawaii's history and flowers in glowing watercolors;
fast becoming one of Hawaii's most sought after artists. Garry literally became a "household" name in Hawaii
when he was selected to create the cover for the GTE Hawaiian Telephone company's 1995
phone book cover. The popular cover, filled with over 20 varieties of Hawaiian grown
orchids, can still be found, framed in galleries and gift shops. He continues to
create glowing, translucent watercolors of the island's most loved blossoms; Plumeria,
Bougainvillea, Hibiscus, Bird Of Paradise and more. The large watercolors, elegantly
framed in Hawaiian Koa Wood hand finished by Garry himself, have been reproduced in
editions of prints, greeting cards and Giclee prints.
Garry's exacting watercolor style is making
a big impression on Hawaii residents and visitors alike. The beauty of bright,
tropical florals has a universal appeal, and paintings of Garry's have been purchased by
people from all over the world. Garry has had numerous paintings excepted in local
and national juried art exhibitions, winning many awards, including best of show.
Recently Mauna Loa Macadamia Nut Company
commissioned Garry for artwork on all of their cans of Macadamia nuts. King's
Village shopping plaza in Waikiki now has a mural near the entrance, completed by Garry in
August 2000. Garry is fast becoming one of Hawaii's favorite watercolor artists. |
